Our Firm
HFH Planning Inc. is a Registered Investment Advisor firm established in 1993. Hank Hanau, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional with expertise in both the financial and investment spheres recognized the need for affordable financial direction by fiduciaries.
Hank owned and operated a multi-million dollar business from 1964 through 1979 before selling it and joining the investment firm of Bache Halsey Stuart Shields (now Wachovia Securities) and becoming a Vice President of Investments.
Along with Hank at HFH Planning is G. Martin Poole, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an MBA in finance from New York University. Martin has had extensive experience working
as a wealth manager at Citi Smith Barney, US Trust and Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase).
HFH Planning is one of the few financial planning firms to charge only on an hourly basis. No referral fees, no commissions (we suggest true no-load mutual funds for investments), no assets under management fees.
That translates into no conflict of interest.

Asset Allocation
When it comes to investing, studies have shown that more than 90% of the return comes from choosing the right asset class, not from choosing the correct stock or bond.
Where many talk of asset allocation in terms of stocks, bonds and cash, we use 10 allocation categories. This approach is intended to provide added downside protection while permitting growth of the portfolio.
Estate Planning
Working with you before you visit an attorney can save you money and ensure that you have the right questions to ask the attorney regarding your estate.
We also suggest (and may assist in drawing) living wills for our clients. We believe that a living will and a medical power of attorney are necessary documents.
Retirement Planning
Longevity is increasing. Social Security is running out of money. It is estimated that "Baby Boomers" are setting aside little more than 1/3 of what they will need to retire comfortably.
HFH Planning assists clients in discovering where they are financially and what they need to do to enjoy retirement.
Risk Management
HFH will recommend the best types of insurance for you, and we will work with you to find the best place to purchase it. We will not receive any commissions or referral fees.
Tax Planning vs. Tax Preparation
Most individuals see their tax preparer once a year, between February 1 and April 15. What they get is tax preparation – what they need is tax planning.
HFH Planning provides pro-active tax planning advice. Our suggestions will help save you money that you had been sending to the IRS.

Our Process
1. Initial Consultation and Data Gathering
The initial consultation is free. During this twenty-to-thirty minute meeting, we will introduce ourselves and discuss what you can expect from HFH Planning, giving you an opportunity to discover if your needs will be satisfied by our approach. We present a list of documents to bring to the next meeting to start the process of creating your personal financial plan.
2. Identification of Issues
A thorough interview to identify pertinent issues and establish short and long-term financial goals. We emphasize a holistic approach to your financial situation by examining your values, attitudes, expectations, and risk tolerance.
3. Goal Setting
Few of us have ever sat down and truly clarified our goals. During this process we assist you in defining, refining, and prioritizing your ideas into realistic concrete goals.
4. Examination of Alternatives
After the meeting we analyze your data. We then present viable alternatives to you. We discuss the pros and cons of each plan of action. You will be able to make an informed decision about your financial future.
5. Implementation
We will work with you to ensure that the plan is executed effectively. This may be accomplished exclusively through HFH Planning, or in combination with your existing professional team.
6. Review/Revision
A quarterly report detailing the results of your individual holdings and comparing them to relevant benchmarks is submitted to you. We will suggest changes to your portfolio due to performance, shifts in goals, or life events.
